The Changing Landscape of Adolescent Leisure

Mr Richard Dobrenov | Deputy Principal & Head of Senior School

At an exciting time for all Australian sports lovers with an Ashes Tour of England for both women and men, the Rugby World Cup in France, the Women’s World Cup Soccer in Australia, and next year’s Olympic Games in Paris all waiting to be devoured, there is a shift in the Australian sporting landscape. These ‘traditional’ sports have experienced a decrease in popularity among many of today’s youth and have been replaced by emerging Olympic sports like skateboarding, break dancing and sport climbing. However, I wonder how long it will take until E-Sports becomes part of the Olympic Games and are video games beneficial to the developing adolescent mind?

In recent years, video games have become increasingly popular among our teens. While some studies have shown that video games can have positive effects, such as improving cognitive skills and promoting social interaction, there is growing concern about the potential negative impact of video games on adolescent well-being.

Research has linked excessive video game use to a range of negative outcomes, including increased aggression, lower academic achievement, and poorer mental health. Studies have also found that excessive video game use can contribute to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

One study conducted by Gentile et al. (2011) found that adolescents who played violent video games for more than two hours a day were more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and social phobia. Another study by Przybylski et al. (2014) found that adolescents who played video games for more than three hours a day had lower levels of wellbeing and were more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety.

These findings are particularly concerning given that video game use among adolescents is on the rise. A survey by the Pew Research Center found that 97% of American teens play video games, with 50% of those teens reporting playing video games “often” or “sometimes” for more than three hours a day. Similar results would be found in Australia.

It’s important to note that not all video games are equal when it comes to their potential impact on adolescent wellbeing. Games that are violent, immersive, or addictive are more likely to have negative effects than games that are non-violent, educational, or promote social interaction.

As parents and educators, it’s important to be aware of the potential negative impact of video games on adolescent well-being and to encourage healthy video game habits. This may include setting limits on video game use, choosing non-violent and educational games, and promoting other forms of social interaction and physical activity.

In conclusion, while video games can have positive effects, excessive and problematic video game use can have negative consequences for adolescent wellbeing. It’s important to promote healthy video game habits and to be aware of the potential risks associated with excessive video game use.

Year 1 – Science and Technology | External Features of Living Things

On Friday the 28 April, Year 1 students proudly opened the SCOTS PGC Year 1 Zoo to family and friends. There was a buzz of excitement in the classroom as the finishing touches were made. Freshly baked cookies were placed in baskets for sale, zoo staff attended to the animal enclosures to ensure the animals were ready for the visitors and the ticket booth was stocked with tickets. There was quite a queue upon opening, but our zoo staff handled the morning rush brilliantly. There was a lot to see and learn about once you joined a tour. Feeding the crocodiles was only for the brave at heart and the dingoes howling took us back in time to the Dreamtime. You could wander through the Savannah, behind the safety of the fence of course, and see the lions, zebras, giraffes and meerkats. It was delightful to watch the penguins, turtles and otters swimming and playing in their enclosures. You had to be quiet to spot an armadillo in the nocturnal enclosure.

During Term 1, the students identified the external features of various animals by looking at images of mixed-up animals and used specific body parts vocabulary to explain the body parts they were seeing. They had fun identifying more external features by observing shadow puppets and suggested which animals they could be, based on their silhouettes. The students watched a video of how to make shadow puppets and tried to imitate them. They continued to investigate more closely the features of animals through examining various body coverings – fur, scales, feathers and skin. Students were introduced to the concept that animals use their body parts to move. They really enjoyed examining various movements of kangaroos and exploring how First Nations people mimic animals in their traditional dance. The students recorded information by drawing and labelling a diagram of the external features of our Junior School frill neck lizard.

The Year 1 students worked collaboratively to design their own zoo. They watched a stimulus video from Perth Zoo where they were asked to help plan a zoo for the future. They examined how the animals were currently grouped at this zoo and worked in small groups to suggest different ways animals could be grouped in their zoo. The students then choose which animals would be included in the zoo. They went on to research their animal and included an interesting fact for our zoo visitors to read. We appreciated the help from our Year 7 and 8 friends in the initial design stage of our diorama animal enclosures.

We enjoyed a wonderful incursion with Mr Ken Brown where he shared Dreamtime stories about Australian animals and Year 1 was excited to adopt the crocodile as our totem animal for this year. We had fun hand printing onto canvas, further strengthening our community bond with each other by bringing our crocodile totem to life. Our time spent with Mr Brown gave us a wonderful opportunity to explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples symbols and compose our own stories for our zoo animals on our boomerang souvenirs.

Meet our Middle School Leaders

Earlier last term, we introduced our Middle School Leaders to our community and since their appointment, they have been doing a power of work in our sub-school to fulfil their leadership duties.

Our leaders work closely with their peers and our College staff each day.  They contribute great ideas about continual improvement areas and are excellent communicators.  We thought our community might like to learn a little more about who they are as people, so over the next few issues, we’ll introduce our leaders more thoroughly.

So, please meet Matilda, Beau, Bonnie and Tommy…

Matilda Judd – Day Student

What are your goals for 2023?
Some of my goals for 2023 are to be a good Middle School leader, get a job and perform in show productions at the Empire Theatre and Pittsworth.

Trip to Suncorp Stadium

What a highlight for almost 100 boarders and staff to attend the recent NRL match between the Broncos and the Rabbitohs in Brisbane at the iconic Suncorp Stadium. Whilst the result made some very happy and others not so pleased, the whole event was a wonderful experience for all, filled with footy, fireworks, light shows and great social interaction. Well done and thanks to all involved where SCOTS PGC was very well represented in the community.

Adopt a Boarder weekend

This is fast approaching on 12-14 May (end of week 4) and is available to all boarding students. It also coincides with Mother’s Day on Sunday. Essentially, girls and boys from all the SCOTS PGC boarding houses are encouraged to spend the weekend with friends from the day school, as approved by their parents or guardians. This may also include staying with a relative/family member or another boarder who offers to host a boarder, or it may even be a trip home for some. Boarding parents and the host parents can make plans and relay these to their respective Directors of Boarding to arrange leave. Please talk with your son/daughter about this great opportunity.

Cardinal

The 2023 Cardinal Ball was a fantastic night for our senior boarding students. The entire event, from the garden party at Girls’ Boarding to the final dance of the night, and the performances by the Rock Bands, was a huge undertaking, so congratulations to all involved; it was spectacular indeed.

It was great to see so many Year 12 boarding parents in attendance and enjoying a dance with their son or daughter before sharing some social time together at the parents’ function. The unique arrivals of the Cardinal partners down East Street, including the classic and hot rod cars, utes and one very big truck (thanks Hank and Abbie) was most entertaining. The night was certainly a fitting celebration for this cohort of students.

National Boarding Week (14-20 May)

SCOTS PGC College will celebrate and highlight all things great about boarding, and our wonderful boarding students next week, as we join into National Boarding Week and the theme of ‘The Patchwork of Boarding’. Please keep an eye out for SCOTS Facebook posts including photos, student profiles, Seniors Supper and much more.

Emma Bradbury | Publications Prefect

The 2023 Cardinal Ball came and went in the blink of an eye but as we reflect on the amazing night of the 6th of May, we will no doubt be able to replay the amazing memories for many years to come. The Class of 2023 have built relationships that will no doubt transcend the years and unite us in ways that we may not even recognise for years to come but the memories of that night will be ours forever.

The afternoon kicked off the garden party where students, families and interested onlookers gathered to take in the spectacle that graced the grounds of Girls Boarding. The grounds were beautifully presented with decorations adorning different parts of the grounds creating a true fairytale Enchanted Garden theme. We most graciously thank the girl boarders for their efforts, along with our maintenance staff, in the preparation of the grounds.

It was evident from all who attended that each and every attendee was determined to just be themselves. The uniqueness of each of our class members was on display with amazing colour, style and individuality on display. Both the boys and the girls were equally stylish and classic in every way.

Festivities then moved to the Des Davey Dining Hall and the obligatory ‘silver carpet’ arrivals. Being a large cohort the timing of the event was executed with military precision thanks to Mr Alley and Mr Kuhn. The vehicles on display and the arrivals were yet another reflection of the personalities arriving which left us all in awe of the efforts made by all to make the evening a memorable one.

Once all had arrived the mother-son and father-daughter dances were performed with hearty enthusiasm. Some of the steps may not have been perfect but the enthusiasm and enjoyment on the faces of all participants left no doubt that all were extremely happy to be at this point. Proud mums and dads were everywhere and rightly so as their children (young adults) tripped the light fantastically through the dances learnt throughout the Term.

Dinner ensued and the sumptuous meal served was yet again a masterpiece created by Mr Rogers and his amazing staff. We thank them all for the wonderful feast they provided and which the hospitality staff served up to us.

The night moved on with dancing and frivolity to its climactic end that saw our very own rock bands “The Clan’ and ‘The Highlanders’ play a set each to round out the evening. There is certainly nothing better than live music and our bands rocked it out to the max.

To my classmates I say congratulations, you all looked stunning and showed the wider community what amazing young men and women are being created here at SCOTS PGC College.

On behalf of the Class of 2023, I would like to thank all staff who made the night possible and believe that without them we would not have been able to enjoy the night as well as we all did. We particularly wish to thank Mrs Hobbs for all her guidance and hard work in pulling the event together.

Equally deserving of our admiration and appreciation are the 2023 Cardinal Committee Members who spent many hours designing, planning and negotiating the final arrangements and creating a memorable atmosphere for all to enjoy.

We now turn our attention to what will be a whirlwind finish to our school days at SCOTS as we negotiate what is the final eighteen school weeks remaining of 2023. Thanks again to all for the wonderful memories created this past weekend that we will carry for the rest of our days and here’s to many more in the coming months.

Please visit our College social platforms to take a look at some of the special images captured from the day or to rewatch our famous ‘silver carpet’ arrivals.

The Taming of the Shrew | Tickets on sale NOW!

Miss Katelyn Woodbine and her cast and crew are proud to present this year’s drama production, The Taming of the Shrew, which will be performed over two evenings (June 2 & 3) in the College Assembly Hall.

The Taming of the Shrew is a classic Shakespearean comedy that tells the story of a wealthy gentleman named Petruchio who attempts to ‘tame’ the strong-willed and outspoken Katherine, known as the ‘shrew.’ Set in 16th-century Italy, the play explores themes of gender roles, power dynamics, and social class.

Petruchio takes on the challenge of wooing and marrying Katherine, hoping to mould her into the obedient and submissive wife he desires. Through a series of comical and sometimes cruel tactics, Petruchio attempts to break Katherine’s spirit and make her conform to societal expectations of a wife.

Tickets are now sale ($20 per ticket) via this link: https://events.humanitix.com/the-taming-of-the-shrew

Representative success

Over the first weeks of Term 2 many students of the College have been out and about contesting trials and championships both near and afar. Below is a snapshot of their success. Congratulations to one and all!

Amelia Kuhn – Queensland Cricket Selection

After recently attending the Queensland School Sport 12 Years and Under Cricket Championships, Amelia Kuhn was selected in the Queensland Team to contest the Nationals later this term.

Southern Downs Cross Country Team

Following last week’s Southern Downs Cross Country, we are pleased to advise that six of our students were selected into the Southern Downs Cross Country Team to contest the Darling Downs Championships next Tuesday 16th May.

We congratulate the following students on their success and wish them all the very best at the Darling Downs Cross Country Carnival:

  • Sophie Benz
  • Solis Mahoney
  • Jemmah Nielsen
  • Tori Winters
  • Cooper Keogh
  • Braxton Kontuzoglus

On top of this individual success, the SCOTS PGC 10-12 years team finished 3rd behind the Central Downs Team and the Warwick West team in the race for the school’s Championship. This was a great effort from our team and a credit to their commitment to running for not only themselves but for their school.

Border District Cross Country

After a successful defence of our Border District Title for Cross Country, we are pleased to advise that the following students have been invited to attend the Darling Downs Championship next Tuesday:

  • Bethany Moore-Kirkland
  • Victoria Quach
  • Lachlan Groves
  • Will Peters
  • Murphy Benson
  • Declan Wren
  • Will Angus
  • Oliver Swift
  • Elliza Moore-Kirkland
  • Amira Duffy
  • Briana Groves
  • Phoebe Selllick
  • Hamish Swift
  • Ben Carey
  • Daniel Hughes
  • Mackenzie Mayall
  • Faith Quach

These runners aran the Border District Course and have made commitments to training that have led to their invitation by the College to attend the Darling Downs event. We wish them all the best next week.

Darling Downs U12 Rugby League

Following 2 days of hectic trials in Goondiwindi, we are excited for and proud of Will Grayson for being selected into the Darling Downs U12 Boys Rugby League Team to contest the State Championships later in Term 2. We wish William all the very best for this championship.

 Darling Downs U15 Rugby Union

Last week we also sent a group of our U15 lads trialled for the Darling Downs U15 Rugby Union Team.

Baxter Twidale, Declyn Wren, Charlie Bergemann, Darcy Hodges, Angus Bauer, Cooper Kendall, Hugh Holden, and Murphy Benson all put their best foot forward and gave a very good account of themselves.

Baxter Twidale and Declyn Wren were successful in gaining selection to the Darling Downs Team at the end of the day with Charlie Bergemann, Darcy Hodges, Angus Bauer, Cooper Kendall all named as shadows for the team. We congratulate Baxter and Declyn on this selection after many weeks of dedicated training and wish them well at the State Championships later this year.

Downs Rugby – Teenage Boys Semi-Finals

This Friday will see the U13 Team enter the semi-finals stage of the Downs Rugby Teenage Competition. Finishing in 4th place, they have a tough task ahead of them to make the Grand Final but we are sure that they will do as they have done all season and fight it out to the death. Congratulations to the team and of course, the coaching staff, Mr Dean Cullen and Mr Phil Strang. Best of luck!

Hockey Champions!

Our Senior Mixed Hockey Team completed the Warwick Interschool Hockey Competition with a clean sheet of four wins against Assumption College and Warwick SHS. In what was a complete domination of the competition, we introduced several new students to the team and they all did their best learning from our older more experienced players. We were down a few players in the final match, however, this did not appear to affect our performance.  Congratulations team!

Campdraft Corner

Our campdrafters continue to impress with results rolling in regularly from our captain, Mia Bischoff, who keeps her finger on the pulse.  Congratulations to the following students who experienced success at the following drafts:

  • Toby Usher | 2nd place in the Juvenile draft at the Goondiwindi Show
  • Belle Meek | 7th in the Juvenile draft at Esk

Schools Cup Hockey Championships – Girls

Last week our Girls Team, led by Emma Bradbury – Captain, and fellow Year 12s Georgie Malone, Rosalie Mauch and Krystal Petersen (our intrepid goalkeeper), overcame a seemingly insurmountable challenge to not only finish second in their pool, but then defeat Downlands in their 3rd and 4th playoff. This has been the girls best finish in the past three years where they have climbed from 6th to 4th and now to 3rd behind eventual Champions, The Glennie School, and runners-up St Joseph’s Toowoomba.

This year saw 12 teams contest the event and the competition was a very tight affair with goal difference determining the playoffs and a shootout for our 3rd and 4th playoff that saw our girls hold their nerve and take the day in sudden death 5-4. Emma Bradbury was 4th highest goal scorer with 5 goals across the day whilst Briana Groves and Lily Malone shared 5th spot with 3 apiece.

We congratulate the girls on their success and look forward to what might be achievable in 2024 with our very young team that will be left with the departure of our seniors.

Hot off the Press!!Late breaking News

Monday 8 May –  Congratulations to Samuel Bourke who returned this week from the Queensland U18 Hockey Championships as a member of the Championship winning Toowoomba Team. The team went undefeated and secured a 3-2 victory in the final against Brisbane.
