Year 8 STEM – Earthquake Machines

Students in Year 8 have been investigating the technologies involved in measuring earthquakes and how to withstand earthquakes.

One of their first tasks was to create a 2 floor structure that could survive a simulated ‘jelly’ earthquake.

Next students investigated the types of waves involved in an earthquake and how energy is transferred through the Earth’s surface.

Finally, students were given the challenge to construct an ‘Earthquake Machine’.  Students could construct an actual model or create an animation using Scratch that showed the characteristics of an Earthquake.  Students will complete their projects early next term.  Stay tuned for their final products!
